TEN OF THE BEST: Week 5
One month into this journey and we are still at it, hope someone has found value in these top ten playlists. If not, well “Hameno Ikoko” (loosely translated: None of my business) I will press on because this exercise has allowed me to discover tunes that I probably wouldn’t have listened to sans TEN OF THE BEST. This week is a bit of a mixed bag genre wise, there is a bit more flavour to the playlist and I guess that’s the whole point of this anyway. Without further Ado!!!!
Check out the spotify playlist at the bottom of this post:
This weeks playlist, in no particular order:
Handirare – Tytan
This artist is one to watch in the near future. One of Zimbabwe’s most talented musicians, who *cough cough* went to the same school as I did back in Zim, Tytan is rightfully making waves in the Zimbo community. I do feel like he deserves to be heard by a wider audience and this song, though not his best, has been on repeat on my playlist in recent times…Please do check out his other tunes, the boy has undeniable talent!
Power Move – Konshens X Vybz Kartel X Sean Paul
If the combination of artists alone doesn’t get you excited, the riddim alone will do the trick…Trust Me!!!! Catchy hook to complement everything that’s going on in this tune, this selection is a no brainer. Heavy Vibes!
Man Don’t Care – JME X Giggs
Lately I have been really getting into the UK grime scene and one artist that stands out amongst his peers is JME. On this offering he comes through strong with the assistance of Giggs, who proves to be the perfect foil for JME’s style. This has been my turn up song for a few weeks now and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.
Medication – Damian “Jnr Gong” Marley
Big up to my selector Kwinton Jafa for introducing me to this tune. This is for my ganja section, you know who you are. All I can say about this tune is, VIBES!
Gimme Dat – Ice Prince X Burna Boy X Yung L
Ice Prince came through on this one. He teams up with Burna Boy and Yung L to deliver a bouncy dancehall track that is sure to get dancefloors pumping all over. It does feel like this tune has quite a bit of replay value as well.
We Change Money – Charly Black
Country Boy again. Laid back tune, but Charly still delivers with the same passion and energy as always. A true hustler’s anthem.
Well Done – Kabaka Pyramid
For my conscious people out there, this is a very pointed tune to the big boys running things. I was having a conversation just this weekend with some friends, and we all agreed that Kabaka Pyramid is probably the most slept on artist on the reggae scene right now. Have a listen and tell me we’re wrong…
Still Remains – Jah Cure
I was thinking maybe it maybe one too many love songs for this week’s playlist, but after further consideration I couldn’t leave this one out. Here Jah Cure comes through with a very emotive tune, and the message is clear as day. Big tune!
630 – Demarco
Who said Demarco was done??? Nuff said!
Love Again – Dexta Daps
Probably my favourite Sinjay at moment, and if a certain Singy Singy didn’t exist he would probably be my top pick out of Jamaica, though that’s a big call. This tune got my attention thanks to the message, a relatable love tune. As a writer, I know how difficult it is to write a love tune without making it sound generic and here Dexta nails the brief. This one is dedicated to my peeps who have gone through some tough relationships, this tune brings a bit of hope.
Hope you enjoy listening to this playlist as much as I do, until the next time…
